Question

Although all of these members have qualities and traits of working well in a team environment, potential for conflict still exist. Based on their characteristics, for Katelyn and Natalie working together could be challenging and may create a conflict that could delay the project. For example, Natalie is ambitious and competitive and has a tendency to find ways to stand out. On the other hand, Katelyn is very driven and strives for perfection. This drives her to have high expectations for her team members, expectations that could be unreasonable at times. She has a tendency to believe she is always right and would not give in. Conflict can arise between these two members because they are junior to the company and they both want to stand out. One strategy that can be implemented to manage or maybe prevent conflict all together, is to assign each team member a particular task or tasks and stablish some form of hierarchy based on their experience and time with the company. Knowing what tasks must be completed by each team member and their position on the team, can minimize the risk or prevent conflict from arising. If in any case conflict arises between team members, a collaborating strategy could also be applied, where they will try to find creative solutions that could be beneficial for everyone and most importantly the completion of the project.

Based on this information:

Summarize management team's vision for the success of this team. Based on what you have identified as the selected team's particular strengths and weaknesses, which specific leadership strategies might you apply to ensure that the vision is ultimately successful? Why?

Explanation / Answer

Katelyn and Natalie two very efficient employees are working in the same team aims at achieving the same objective which is success of the project. They have around 2 to 3 years of experience in the organization and in the industry and both of them has come to this new project after completing one or two projects successfully in there previous team and hence they have referred in this critical project. After a formal introductory round and conversation the manager, while analyzing the feedback of the employees observed that Katelyn and Natalie may experience a conflict which will affect the productivity and working environment which is not at all expected from the project because without a proper environment no project can be successful. The given data points out that Natalie is very much ambitious and loves her work passionately, her unique skill of creativity has always made her stand out from others and hence she has been the performer for quite a few years. Katelyn is a perfectionist and she generally does not like to compromise on any aspect of the project even if the aspect is very small and negligible she will attend to that and find a remedy. The manager feels that these two possess equivalent and even contrasting characters in some aspects, therefore conflict may arise as both are in a critical and important stage of their career and will try to go past each other.

Competition is healthy but in this case it may go out of hand because they may go to any extent which will affect the team because at the end of the day it is a team and the performance of the team as a whole counts rather than individual excellence. In order to get rid of such conflicts, a collaborating strategy is applied were if any conflict arise the team needs to find solutions in order to resolve the issue. The team needs to be creative and unique enough so that the any conflicting activity is avoided not only Natalie and Katelyn, even other team members should also not indulge in a conflict because the reason is very obvious, any conflict affects productivity because team work is what matters and that is priority instead of any individual interest. Applying the hierarchy rule may turn out to be more critical because there may be a conflict between the seniors and juniors, instead the team should work as a single unit and avoid any conflict because the organization want a single team to deliver.
