Question

experience, and possibly doing a little outside research on your own, please write me about a 3 page paper, double spaced describing how you would like to see the education system reformed in time for your children (or your friends children if you don't plan on having any) to take advantage of the reforms. Why do you think that these changes would make for a better system than yours? Do you believe that your reforms will be cost effective? What impediments do you see preventing your reforms from being implemented? If you use outside sources, please be sure the properly cite them.

Explanation / Answer

The educational system needs reforms as with the 21st century, everything has changed. As I am already into academics and working as a professor, out of my experience I can share few things in the educational system in India. The change needs to be from the elementary level till higher education. From the elementary level, students are fed with mugging up the concepts or simply remembering everything, memorizing facts & figures and based on the written examination that is conducted at the end of the semester, the student is appraised to the higher class. The academic studies are encouraged, and non-academic activities are discouraged.

The overall performance is measured with written exams and not on overall performance carried out by the student. The ideal mode of learning from generations is remembering and judgment are based on 10th and 12th results. The hands-on experience or practical knowledge is minimum, so the system is theoretical in nature rather than practical orientation. The societal rules and regulations have made the system rigid in which other than this spoon-feeding system everything else is disregarded. Although we have the best institutes in the world like IIMs and IITs still the orientation remains same.

The technology has taken a step ahead in schools leading from pure lecture classes to smart classes where visual, audio classes along with mechanisms are displayed which help in better understanding but it is limited to few private schools only. Our government has taken a very late decision regarding the compulsory education till 7th. The literacy rate has improved over the years but still, 100% literacy is long-way to achieve. The rural areas are still suffering from the basic education system. The quality of education also matters. By specifying the minimum qualification for the faculties and teachers, the quality can be maintained. These reforms might not be cost-effective as it involves reaching each corner of India but by involving NGOs into this system the task can be divided and can be accessible to many underprivileged kids. For socially and economically backward people, more scholarships can be provided but it should not ignore the merit and qualification of general students. Merit should be taken care, then this will lead to upliftment of the educational system in India. The potential advantage can be taken of entrepreneurs, if government decide to initiate the improvement of the educational system, many people are non-employed after having degrees and qualifications, so these people can be the change agents for the educational change.

Even the value systems that Indians carry should be conveyed in the childhood to the students. It will help in building a person who is moral, ethically correct and can take correct decisions in life. To become a sensible citizen should be the primary goal instead of building competition of being the topper. Creative thinking and innovativeness should be encouraged from elementary education so that they can explore the new era. The environment of the schools should be such that it should create enthusiasm in them to contribute to the world.

Research in education is highly required as India is a country where highly intellectuals are there but lack of utilization of their abilities has resulted in lower performance. Providing ample benefits and opportunities will reduce migration of intellectuals to other countries so that they can serve India and bring out developments in each sphere. Arts, crafts, internships, sports, extra-curricular activities from elementary levels would inhibit sportive nature.
