The issues:
• She lacked local knowledge and had a very thin network
• She was unaware of recruiting methods in Birmingham
• The culture of a southern city was different than Chicago’s
Explanation / Answer
The career development model is a 5 step model which helps us in understanding and taking decisions related to further development of the career. The 5 steps include assessment of the problem, Exploration of the options, preparation for the explored option, Implementation of the options and then taking the decision accordingly.
Let us look Chris' case with this model.
Step 1 here Chris has moved to Birmingham due to family commitments, although she had experiences, she lacked local knowledge and had a very thin network, which is helpful for getting leads for the positions, she did not know the recruitment methods in the city of Birmingham and the culture was a bit different to adapt as she was from Chicago. Here there are basic problems, which could be learned by polishing her skill, the network is something which is built over the time, here she should consider building the network for the further advancement in her careers.
Step 2 Exploration of the options, here Chris needs to find the options she has locally, they should align with her previous roles, which would have some weight. Plus she would have to learn local knowledge, which would be a addon once she goes through a recruitment process. She should be adaptive to the local culture, which she would be able to learn once she has local knowledge.
Step 3 - She should learn the local knowledge and for that, she should visit the local marketplace and cultural festivals where she would be able to learn basic local etiquette, which would be step 1 of her learning. She should undertake some cultural sensitization workshops, which are professionally available. This would help her to learn more about the locals and fit into the culture. She should consult with HR consultants to know about the recruitment methods, plus ask few family friends would strengthen the case.
Step 4 - She should enrol in the above-said classes and activity and should periodically check her results, which would help her to see her progress and make decisions.
Step 5 - Once evaluation of the implementation is done, the best decisions must be taken which would fit in all parameters.
