Management consultancy was all he knows
He didn’t know what else he could do
And he didn’t know what he wanted to do
Explanation / Answer
The four standard steps of a Career Development Model are –
(1) Self-Assessment.
(2) Reality Check.
(3) Implementation.
(4) Career Management.
As a Career Consultant, I would suggest William to follow the preceding steps of the Career Development Model to decide the type of job that would be most suitable for him.
First of all, William needs to do a self-assessment with respect to his interests, personality, skills, experiences and values.
William has an interest in management consultancy and he should search another job related to this field. He may choose a smaller firm where the work pressure will be lesser and he can have a work life balance. He may draw a lower salary but he has to accept that so that he can give more time to his family.
William also needs to understand his personality. He is a family person and hence should find a job where he will get enough time to devote to his family and it is not just work and work all throughout. Hence he should study the company culture and accordingly select a company which focuses on an employee’s work life balance.
William may also think of starting his own management consultancy firm and he should acquire the necessary skills of running a company, especially people handling skills. He may also do freelancing in the same field but has to acquire the skills for that.
William should choose a company where the employer values an employee properly. Moreover, William’s values should match with the organization’s values.
After the stage of Self-Assessment, William ought to do a reality check by finding out the current trends in recruitment, the various other occupations which are in demand and the level of education required. He may try to master some new skill like big data analytics (latest trend) which will give him an edge in his field. He may shift to another lesser demanding occupation but where he can utilize his current skill and experience.
Thirdly William has to implement his plan so that he can land a job of his choice. He will have to send his Resume to different companies which are of his liking and wait for interview calls. On getting interview calls and attending them, he will also have to follow up till the time he gets the desired job. In between he should also network with people in important meetings, conferences and others or even resort to use of social media.
Lastly William needs to focus on career management which will enable him to rise up the organizational hierarchy in the same company while achieving a work life balance. He should try to find ways of becoming more efficient so that he can give time to his family and also do justice to his work.
