WWYD #7 Because of the amount of the expense, your company's CFO had to approve a $500,000 purchase order for hardware and software needed to upgrade the servers used to store data for the Product Development Department. Everyone in the department had expected an automatic approval, and they were disappointed when the purchase order request was turned down. Management said that the business benefits of the expenditure were not clear. Realizing that she needs to develop a more solid business case for the order, the vice president of product development has come to you for help. Can you help her identify arguments related to protecting intellectual property that might strengthen the business case for this expenditure?

For developing a more strong business is must be a team and must be also united
to protect the intellectual property because it is very important in the whole world trade.

(1) Develop problem statement:
  
   To procure Hardware and Software needed to upgrade the servers used to store the data for Product development.
  
   Protecting intellectual property is important in world trade. A very concise idea as to why we need this upgrade
   is to be provided.
  
   A problem statement prepared should cover the below points -
  
   How the business would be improved with this upgrade i.e. profit with upgrade.
   How the time taken to develop the product would be improved by this upgrade.
   How important is to release the product ahead of the schedule.
  
   They must provide a very specific and a concise idea for developing a more solid business case and must be elabrated clearly.
      
(2)   Identify alternatives:
   At this stage, all the stakeholders should be involved in discussion.
   Brainstorming with others will help in gaining new ideas and alternatives.
  
   Questions like why this upgrade, what will happen if the upgrade does not get approved.
   How to go about without the upgrade.
  
   Can we have only the Hardware upgrade and compromise on Software upgrade or viceversa ?
  
   All these points should be discussed in detail.
  
(3)   Evaluate and choose alternative:
   We should first list down the problems faced as of now without the upgrade.
  
   Then the advantages of having the Hardware and Software upgrade should be discussed at the performance level.
  
   Next should look for an alternatives to the currently selected Hardware and Software components in the market.
  
   Apart from price, we should also discuss various factors like speed of the new Processor etc.
  
   Also, should all the Hardware and Software upgrade listed down should be carried out OR can we skip few among them.
  
   Should evaluate alternatives based on multiple criteria like processor speed VS new Operating system OR
   increase the network speed or the RAM size etc.
  
(4) Implement decision:
  
   Once we zeroin to the changes required in the current infrastructure and the Upgrades required for the same,
   we should develop a plan to implement the same.
  
   The plan should involve the below points -
   - We cannot have both the Hardware and Software upgrade at once.
   so the plan should involve the exact date from the date of procurement as to when this upgrade will start.
   - Which will happen first - Software upgrade or Hardware upgrade.
   - Also, we cannot afford to bring the entire system down for long time to do the upgrade,
   so the stages in which either Software OR Hardware upgrade will happen.
   - Also the downtime for the same should also be specified.
   - When the upgrade will happen - it cannot be done on a weekday. So some weekend OR on holidays it should be done.
   - Also, what are all the backup plans incase the upgrade fails for some reason.
  
(5)   Evaluate results:

   Once we are through with the above 4 steps, here we should evaluate the success of the upgrade against various parameters.
   We should monitor whether this upgrade helped in overcoming the shortcomings present earlier etc.
  
  
From these steps we will get to know whether our approach is successful or NOT.
