Question
As detailed in the Washington Post piece, the author states that the "military should have completed the design and development process before testing and manufacturing, in the classic waterfall pattern, rather than trying to do it all concurrently". From a project management perspective within the context of engineering management, what are the advantages & disadvantages of this strategy (name and detail at least two (2) each)? Response should be no more than two (2) pages in length. Again, response should reflect an understanding of the nature scale, and scope of the effort, as detailed in the readings Think as an engineer with an understanding of the engineering design process: iterative nature of "doing" engineeringExplanation / Answer
Waterfall model is also called as linear sequential life cycle model it is going to the simplest model to understand and to use in specific terms.
Which type of model is visible used for small projects and there are no special requirements in the project. This consists of several phases and end of each phase overall part of the project is measured. On the basis of the measured part continuation or discarding the project is decided. In waterfall method the phases does not overlap Each Other.
Advantages of waterfall model.
It is very simple and very easy to use.
Very easy to manage as well as having a very rigid structure made it more specific delivery of review process.
Every face complete whole at once and they does not overlap
It works for smaller projects very efficiently where all the requirements are understood.
Disadvantages of waterfall model
Once the project comes at the testing phase it is very hard to go back or quit the operation.
High amounts of risk is involved and the model is usually uncertain.
It cannot handle Complex and object oriented projects.
Not good for long and ongoing projects.
It is not suitable for the project where there is high risk of changing.
Applying this model in the product development of military, this type of product development model would not be beneficial for military. As most of the times military have to change equipments according to the needs and the development of new technology. This is specific model is reluctant to changes and development cannot be rolled back to the previous state without completing the specific says when it will increase the overall cost in terms of implementation of changes into the model.
Application of this type of model into the developing new arms and weapons for the military would not be very beneficial. It would directly decrease the overall efficiency as well as productivity of the system as military operations mostly are prone to changes and this specific type of model does not allow this flexibility to change the products while they are being developed.
