Question

Question 2 (a) A manufacturing company produces two products I and Il. The production of both products is achieved in two separate work centres A and B. Each item of product I requires 5 labour-hours in work centre A and 4 labour-hours in work centre B. Each item of product Il on the other hand, requires 3 labour-hours in work centre A and 6 labour-hours in work centre B. The company has a regular capacity of 560 labour-hours per day for work centre A and 800 labour-hours per day for work centre B. The cost per labour-hour is $80 and $50 for work centres A and B respectively (in a ratio of 8:5). In addition, the unit value of goods-in-process during production is $35 per item of product I and $25 for that of product The company considers it undesirable to have more than $7,250 of total goods-in-process per day. It is also estimated that for the coming planning period, not more than 100 and 150 items of products and respectively can be sold per day. The company wishes to achieve the following goals in an order of descending priority. P1: Limit the total lock-up capital of goods-in-process for each day to $7,250. Avoid any underutilization of regular capacity of labour-hours in centres A and B Ps: P4: Avoid any overutilization above the regular capacity of labour-hours in centres A and B. Formulate the above problem as a goal programming model which can determine how many items of each product should be produced per day. (You do not have to solve the model) (17 marks) (b) Use the revised simplex tableaus to solve the following goal programming model: Subject to Xxdi -d-800 3x2+ d,"-d,' = 1400 x1,x,di,di, d2,d2,ds,ds0 (16 marks)
