Question

Learning and growth: your skills and learning ability. How do you learn, and how can you be successful in the future? For example, the course that you are taking in conjunction with this book may lead to a degree, be a prerequisite for other courses, and so on.

Internal: your physical health and mental state. How can you control these to create value for yourself and others? How can you remain feeling good at work as well as in your spare time? For instance, your objectives and activities related to physical and emotional fitness.

Customer (external): relations with your spouse, children, friends, employer, colleagues, and others. How do they see you?

Financial: financial stability. To what degree are you able to fulfill your financial needs? Again, do you seek financial independence, resources to fund other endeavors?

Your objective should be to develop your personal vision statement and list several areas of development in learning, internal, customer, and financial facets of the scorecard. You should be able to fit the scorecard on a single page, for easy and frequent reference.

Moving forward you should reference this as a way to assess your own personal growth progress and a way to ensure you are on track.

Explanation / Answer

I see my learning as an everyday and a lifelong process. The day I stop learning or think I know too much, I am doomed to slide. This internal locus of control is the primary factor driving my learning and thus my growth. I learn by being vigilant with my senses whatever I read, hear and observe. Once the activity, topic, subject is picked up I submit that I don’t know. Next I start thinking logically and ask question, search for answers. When answers are collected, I analyze and assimilate them to accept them and also allocate the degree of contribution of each answer towards the question. This satiates my intellectual curiosity.

Also with time we forget things and hence we need to revise them as often as possible. I do that by visiting my books often, staying in touch with recent happening.

This is not possible with so many distractions around and limited time in a day and hence I pick the value add activities and neglect the time guzzling and non value add activities.

My personal vision is that the courses I take are chosen for their inherent value and also them as a precursor to the next courses and the whole set of subjects selected would help me in my professional career. My area of improvement would be to take a few courses in fine arts, philosophy to avoid being too left-minded.

Willingness to do the right thing and ability to do it are different. We need to take care of our physical health in order to ensure that our limbs and mind support us in our endeavors. Next mental well being is also important to make difference between important and non important things, to prioritize things, to focus on the task at hand. We need to ward of negative thoughts arising internally and negative energy from outside to keep our mental state pristine and focus on our growth.

A man’s company is very vital in his happiness and we need to be around people who look at the brighter side of things, who focus on the solution and not the problem, who crib less act more.

Physical exercise also helps us to have a great appetite, deep sleep, good hormone secretion and overall happiness quotient.

I aim to be more physically fit and control my diet to avoid junk food and irregular meal habits.

Customer (external): relations with your spouse, children, friends, employer, colleagues, and others. How do they see you?

External (or Social) factors also play a vital role in one’s learning and growth. A positive set of friends, colleagues help us with great suggestions based on their knowledge, experience and their willingness to share the same with us so that we tide over difficult situations in personal and professional life.

Since we cannot learn everything first hand, we have to rely on others’ experience so it is very important to have a great set of people around you.

I do have a great set of friends (except a few rotten ones who are my 2nd degree friends) and very intelligent and helpful colleagues, But I aim to snap ties with the rotten ones gradually and spend more time with the knowledge and humble folks.

Financial: financial stability. To what degree are you able to fulfill your financial needs? Again, do you seek financial independence, resources to fund other endeavors?

I am able to fulfill my basic needs to a large degree and I am grateful to all uncontrollable factors the almighty, my parents, my neighborhood, the financial support of my parents etc. But I have many dreams and professional to adorn and hence I would need a lot of financial resources to acquire the necessary qualifications and the experience to don each of them, I plan to do so by alternating my studies and work (+savings for next leg) every 4-5 years. But overall I would remain asset-light and the biggest asst would be my knowledge, IQ and EQ which would northwards till I stop breathing one day.
