Facebook's mission as stated from their official page is "is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. People use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what’s going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to them".It is primarily driven by a hacker culture where everyone is encouraged to be creative and innovative.
The key issues it currently is facing is the non directional way of the comapny. It said connecting people is the objective but the next step and the big picture is missing for the general organizational direction. Though in a statement its CEO said about building social infrastructure, there is no clear direction even in that context as well.
Facebook essentially operates on a cost leadership strategy where they try to minimise their costs of operation and doing business by increasing their reach to the whole global market. With this strategy their strategy to build revenue base comes with setting up a smooth social networking experience and increasing the reach further. Thus their strategy to open and enter new markets comes into picture for this expanding revenue base by focussing on the market penetration activities. The other issue is the data privacy of its users who are used as products in some cases allegedly against their will or consent.
The main customers of facebook are the advitisers or the companies to whom the user data is sold to. The users are the products which are nicely packaged into data units and sold to these companies. Its primary competitors are LinkedIn, snapchat and instagram. It has ofcourse bought instagram reducing their competitor and increasing their competitive strength. The other 2 companies linkedIn and snapchat are in the same space where millions of other social netwrking websites are there but these two are gaining momentum very quickly and increasing their membership across generations.
