Question
You are the project manager for a construction project to repave a 3 mile section of highway. The project is planned to coincide with the winter months where the area typically has lots of rain and colder weather making work slow and generally inefficient.
In some years, this area gets unusually good and mild weather where the work would proceed more quickly and without the typical winter delays.
Is the possibility of “good” weather a risk to the project? Why or why not? What, if anything should you do about this possibility?
Explanation / Answer
Yes the possibility of a Good Weather does hold a risk to the project, but from an economical standpoint instead of an operational standpoint. While the work can be completed quickly, the problem is that the project's resources were compiled for bad weather, which means that more resources were bought and the operation was intentionally overstaffed and over budgeted in order to meet the project's timeline.
This is because this is a problem in inventory management
Inventory includes a catalogued list of all the good and or services of the company or the raw materials of goods or services that the company currently has in order to understand the quantity and products that the ware house or a business needs from its supplier.
Inventory Management will prevent the following issues
- Over Supply or Under supply of resources such as time and budget constrains, manpower or access to human resources , talent and technology. due to lack of operational planning.
- Over estimating or under estimating the timeline of a project and the firm's or the teams ability to complete it within the given time frame and resource constraints.
The possibility of a good weather causes Over Supply and Over Estimation which throws the project's budget of track.
The solution to this problem is to use accurate forecasting methods & good operational planning
Operational Planning involves laying down the road map for the execution of a project, in order to deliver a product or a service. The core operations management team works with various units of the production like Forecasting, manufacturing. supply chain. vendors, workforce management teams in order to execute a project on time and within budget. It also involves designing , controlling & auditing any business's manufacturing operations of its products or services. Operations management plays a major role in manufacturing companies , cost centres , back office operations, business process outsourcing or BPO's.
