Question

3. Disadvantages. In Amanda's proposal to switch NCSU from a semester system to trimester calendar, she appealed to undergraduate students by making the following arguments: • The trimester system will allow students to take a greater variety of courses. Trimesters lengthen the academic year to span from August through June. • Courses taught during trimesters will focus on a narrow range of topics and skill sets. • The implementation of trimesters will likely result in a net decrease in the number of students admitted to the university. Now, answer the following questions:

• How might one of these claims be used as reluctant testimony? (i.e. as an admission that the affirmative plan isn’t perfect, but still better than the alternative)

• How might one of these claims be used to claim an advantage for the audience?

• How might one of these claims be used as a disadvantage against Amanda’s case?

Explanation / Answer

• How might one of these claims be used as reluctant testimony?
(i.e. as an admission that the affirmative plan isn’t perfect, but still better than the alternative)
::
The trimester system will allow students to take a greater variety of courses. Trimesters lengthen the academic year to span from August through June.
The above claim is not a perfect claim; because there is a little relation between the length of semester and knowledge gained. The desirable thing is to gain more knowledge in efficient way. But, it is usually assumed/beleived that more is gained in a bigger span.

• How might one of these claims be used to claim an advantage for the audience?
::
Courses taught during trimesters will focus on a narrow range of topics and skill sets.
The above claim may appear advantageous to the audience; because students usually feel that lesser the subjects lesser the load. And almost everyone want to focus on their area of intereset.

• How might one of these claims be used as a disadvantage against Amanda’s case?
::
The implementation of trimesters will likely result in a net decrease in the number of students admitted to the university.
The above claim appears to be disadvantageous because the University may have to face loss of Students Admission
