Question
Are you suggesting to install the scrubber in stages? what argument questions would you address to stakeholders?? What ethical considerations that lead you to the decision to install the scrubber?? You are the general manager of a regional chemical company. In the course of producing your bulk chemicals, large amounts of particles and smoke are emitted through your plant’s smokestack. The level of pollutants is below current EPA regulations, and you are violating no laws, but neighborhood groups are complaining about minor health problems caused by the smoke. After investigating numerous alternatives, you find the most effective solution would be to install a “scrubber” system, which will remove 90% of the pollutants and ash. Cost: $1 million. Do you install the system?
Explanation / Answer
YEs. We should install the scrubber in stages. If it is done in one go, it will be a huge spend of 1 Million dollar for the company and hit the P&L statement of the company. So, it is more logical to do it in phases. Moreover, as per government guidelines it is under limit so it should not be an issue.
The ethical considerations are :Health of local people and Welfare of society. The company will serve as an example for others that actions should be taken in right spirit. There are cases when thinks may be legally okay but ethically wrong. Hence, it becomes important to handle tactfully.
