Recently it was announced that two major hospital systems would be merging their services in to one entity. Both are comprised of multiple hospital units and specialty clinics. While on the surface, this has been touted as an economical move with substantial savings to both parties and the potential to solidify their market share, there are as yet many barriers to overcome. For instance, one system has its roots as a Catholic entity, while the other began with its origins as a Jewish facility. The medical staff is divided on whether the merger is good for patients and their practices. Both gorups of employees are understandably unsettled as it is uncertain who of the senior administrative staff will remain. The organizational culture of both institutions is also of major concern. Given these circumstances, what form or model(s) of leadership would you bring to bear? Describe in detail the steps you would take to redirect the mission and vision of this new emerging entity.

Merger Process

A gap of knowledge remains in merging of two organizational units.With the increase of new staff, they may be high turnover. So, the concerned leader plan to divide of available staffs for both units. With the knowledge of leadership styles and strategy, the leader has to retain the staff by using effective merger strategy. In merging process, the administrative staff has to plan confidentiality in order to avoid rumors of both cultures and to manage the staff post-merger. Merger planning consists of construction and analysis of ideas and assessment of practices. Alternative merger plan should be developed if the current plan was not successful. The employee should be analyzed as a part of a new organization.

Leadership Strategy

Transformational Leader has to empower the employees in understanding and accomplish their job. He has to motivate the employees by giving assurance to their job. The leader should have the ability to evaluate the level of competence of employees before merging. The Organizational Leader should have motivation, stimulation, direction, delegation, and support towards the organization growth.

The transactional Leader must have trust between the employee and the management. He has to reward of an employee for his work. Moreover, the most optimistic leader should be selected, that he can be innovative, able to direct the employee and to achieve high outcomes.

Hospital Leaders must also recognize the investment required to support the new health care system and to bear the financial risks.The combined operations of two hospitals would redirect in cost savings and to promote valued population health.
