Unit 4: Discussion - Electronic Media

Downloading free music, movies, and other electronic media from the Internet, although illegal, still occurs on sites such as BitTorrent.

1. Do you think you should have the ability to download free music files of your choice? Do you think the musicians who oppose online music sharing have made valid points?

2. Discuss the differences you see between sharing music files online and sharing CDs with your friends.

3. The current price to buy a song online is about $1. Is this a fair price? If not, what price would you consider fair?

Explanation / Answer

1.Yes a person should be allowed and have the ability to download free music files of their choice since everyone is not rich who can buy CD'S everytime and even in cd they get songs of a particular music group of singer. there are many singers and people want to have the access to a wide variety of them.As a result it should be legalised to allow free access to music files over the internet so that no matter who is rich or who is poor, everyone has the same level of access.

musicians who oppose online sharing want people to buy their CD's instead of promoting piracy by downloading from the web. they are right on their part since they work hard and the deserve the money by selling of the cd's but again the common public has to suffer due to that since everyone doesnt have the same amount of money to access it.

2.a)Sharing files online is extremely fast as compared to sharing cd's with friends. it takes a few minutes to upload when done online and sharing cd's could take hours to days......b) a number of files can be shared online which could be from 1 to 1000 within an hout however a cd gives access to 10-12 songs of the album so sharing it online provides more variety of music to the people than sharing cd's.....c)sharing it online gives a central access to the people of the world to download and listen to it however sharing cd with friends gives access to only a few friends.......d)sharing it online must be promoted as it saves time......and sharing cd's takes a very long time.....

3)the current price is high. not everyone is rich to access the music. according to me the acces to music should be made free so that people from across the globe can access it without any problems.however a price of 0.25$ per song can be fine since a lot of musicians wont agree to the idea of sending their songs free. I think thats a better price for the average class of people.
