Question
Imagine you are a network administrator and you are proposing the implementation of Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V to replace the existing VMware vSphere infrastructure utilized by the organization. Examine at least two (2) characteristics of Hyper-V that you would consider highlighting in order to convince the business decision makers and entice them to approve the proposed change. Specify the key reasons why you believe these characteristics are important in making your case to achieve the approval needed.
Explain what you believe are the top three (3) improvements and / or enhancements to Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 from its Server 2008 predecessor and indicate the key reasons why you feel these improvements and / or enhancements can benefit organizations by realizing the full potential of Hyper-V.
Explanation / Answer
Answer :
The characteristics of Hyper-V in order to convince the business are :
Generation 2 Virtual Machines : Virtual machine generation determines the virtual hardware and functionality that is presented to the virtual machine. Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 R2 includes two supported virtual machine generations i.e Generation 1 and Generation 2.These new Generation 2 VMs are built exclusively to be run only as VMs. They leave all the legacy VM belongins behind. The new VMs are UEFI-based. They can boot off network adapters. These can run only the Windows 8.The most forward-thinking enhancement in Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V is the new Generation-2 virtual machines. There’s no BIOS and no legacy devices. When creating a new virtual machine in Hyper-V Manager you need to specify a virtual machine generation.
Storage Quality of Service: Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 R2 includes storage Quality of Service.Storage QoS enables you to manage storage throughput for virtual hard disks that are accessed by your virtual machines.Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V introduces the ability to provide Quality of Service for storage. Storage Quality of service gives you the ability to control back I/O-intensive Virtual Machines, making sure that one or two overly active VMs don’t take the greatest share of the host storage subsystems.Storage QoS enables you to specify the maximum and minimum I/O loads in terms of I/O operations per second for each virtual disk in your virtual machines.
Improvements To Hyper-V :
Live Migration: Hyper-V live migration has been updated to allow the administrator to select the optimal performance options when moving virtual machines to a different server.New Hyper-V release also features two ways to achieve live migrations. First, it enables the VM memory and data to be compressed when performing the live migration. This compression can enable up to a 2x performance improvement for live migration.Hyper-V administrators can configure the appropriate live migration performance options based on their environment and requirements.
Live VM Export :Hyper-V is updated to support exporting a virtual machine or a virtual machine checkpoint while the virtual machine is running. It is no longer need to shut down a virtual machine before exporting. The new Hyper-V also provides the ability to perform live exports of running VMs. This feature can help you more easily clone and move VMs. The export process takes a snapshot of the VM’s current state.Exporting a virtual machine while the virtual machine is running allows the administrator to export the virtual machine without incurring any downtime. The Export option is now available as an action for a running virtual machine from Hyper-V Manager.
Extended Replica : In extended replication, replica server forwards information about changes that occur on the primary virtual machines to a third server . After a planned or unplanned failover from the primary server to the Replica server, the extended Replica server provides further business continuity protection. As with ordinary replication, you configure extended replication by using Hyper-V Manager. Hyper-V Replica is one of the most popular features in Server 2012. With Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V, you can now replicate a target VM that has been replicated from another Hyper-V instance. This allows a hosting company that might be acting as a Hyper-V Replica target to back up or replicate the VM for redundancy. Addition to these Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V lets you control the interval by which the replication logs are sent from the source to the replica target. The frequency of replication, which previously was a fixed value, is now configurable. You can also access recovery points for 24 hours.
