Answer to question 11:
It normally cost more to ship by truck than rail. The advantage of truck transport is shipment of smaller lot vis a vis rail transport.
All modes of transport are capable equally for the service they are meant for. Thus it is not possible to generalize that air transport is more capable than truck. Similarly in present day security arrangement, all modes of transport incorporate sufficient security for cargo.
The advantage of transport by water is cheaper cost of transport. However the delivery time is longer and uncertain because while transporting by water especially in sea , ships face all types of perils of sea which put cargo delivery under bigger risk in terms of quality and delivery time .
This is not true for trucking where quality of product does not get affected by weather on road.
Therefore , it can be concluded that “ ON AVERAGE TRUCK TRANSPORT IS MORE RELIABLE THAN WATER”
Answer to question 12 :
Variance of lead time
= Variance of order processing time + Variance of transit time
= (Standard deviation of processing time )^2 + ( standard deviation of transit time)^2
= 1.5x 1.5 + 3 x 3
= 2.25 + 9
= 11.25
Hence, standard deviation of lead time = Square root ( Variance of lead time ) = Square root ( 11.25) = 3.35 ( 3 .4 rounded to one decimal place )
