Assume that Client #2 has already exchanged many packets with the Web Server, and now Client #2 transmits an HTTP Request packet (containing a request for a web page) to the Web Server. What are the specific numeric values that will be in each of the following header fields of this HTTP Request packet, when sent by Client #2? a) (3 points) Source Address in Ethernet header b) (3 points) Destination Address in Ethernet header c) (3 points) Source Address in IP header d) (3 points) Destination Address in IP header TDC 365 HW #1

Explanation / Answer

Writing answer only for question3 since that was the one asked.

3.

Since Client #2 has already exchanged many packets with the WebServer, it already knew that it these packets go through the router (gateway). So, it uses the router's MAC address as the destination address in the Ethernet Header, while the source address will continue to be the Client #2's MAC address.

So,

(a) Source address in ethernet header = MAC address of Client #2 = 00:01:02:03:04:06

(b) Destination address in ethernet header = MAC address of the router = 00:01:02:03:04:44

(c) IP Address in the source header will be the IP address of Client #2 = 160.16.0.11

(d) IP Address in the destination header will be the IP address of the Web Server = 160.16.0.105

In this case, the router will identify that the packet with this destination IP belongs to a different network and routes it accordingly based on its routing table.
