The benefit of accessing the system ( open and close garage door) from within the house is the ability to use the function of closing the door using a PC or Laptop connected to the same network. It gives additional security to the system.
A multi-layered switch connected in the system would have dedicated port allocation for specific data transfer in a specified packet form. This lets the SBC-PT to get the instructions in a dedicated network port protocol.
The primary benifit of storing door open status is to be able to program it to close automatically when the job is done, instead of leaving it open. It can be programmed efficiently in future to be able to close in a specific period of time or by using a camera to check the movement status in garage.
The option of scalability is missing on this SBC IoT. We would not be able to add more hardware features like in an SOC setup.
