From an organization’s point of view, a value chain is a process or set of activities which the organization is a apart of and which performs the process to create some value preferably through a service or product or other means, in the market the organization if operating in. Thus from an organizational point of view, the input, processing i.e. transformation activities and output of the value in a value chain matters. Now, an organization's supply chain is the flow of the information, products, materials and funds to create a good or service that defines some value created in the market.
Thus the different functions to an organization’s supply chain are: product development, marketing, operations, distribution, finance and customer service. All of the above organization’s supply chain create value in the market and thus it is very related to the “value chain”.
The role of information systems in an organization’s supply chain is immense. The supply chain management of the information and material flows related to the demand and supply process is controlled by technologically advanced system using information systems. The information systems consists of the user-interface and also provide the information and information processing capability for operations in the supply chain such as strategy, operations, management analysis, and decision-making functions in the organization’s supply chain.
