Question
Ethics might many a times make one take decisions which might be unpopular, inconvenient or more importantly unprofitable. However, leaders strong on ethics will not let such things get in the way and stay strong on their ethical decisions.
Given below are some ethical leadership characteristics:
From the above we can see that ethical leaders might have to take decisions that make them unpopular but the fact that they are transparent make them trustworthy and people like leaders who are honest and open as they can be trusted easily.
Now since the leader behaves in an ethical way the group too will behave similarly and overall the group will behave ethically. It will positively affect the moral responsibility of the team.
For instance, we were a part of the hiring team and we had to hire a batch of fifteen people. For some reason we lost the client and we did not need the batch anymore. However, we had issues offer letters and people had resigned from their old jobs. The management said we do not need this batch so rescind the offers. However, our manager stood up for the team and the prospective joinees and said that offers were made a long time back and there are people who have resigned from their old jobs and almost completed serving their notice. If the offers get rescinded now they might be in trouble as they do not get this job and they might lose their old job as well. The management finally relented and agreed to hire the batch.
The moral and ethical values of the manager and the team did not allow them to accept the management’s decision. They fought for what was right and prevailed.
