Question

Presentations play a powerful role in one’s career. A good and persuasive presentation can be a turning point in one’s area of field. Imagine yourself pitching your business idea to a group of investors. An effective and persuasive presentation has the ability to bring you closer to the million dollar funding for your start up. Or may be, it’s the end of the financial year and you are making a presentation to the President of your organisation about how your department has fared in the year. Who knows your presentation skills might fetch a promotion for you to your dream position in the company. Below discussed are some of the tips to make effective and persuasive presentation:

Know your audience: Before even typing a single word of your presentation, involve yourself in a thorough research. Engage in knowing your audience. Who all will be attending your presentation? What are their expectations? What needs or goals of theirs are going to get satisfied after listening to your presentation? After knowing the answers to all these questions, customise your content to include them in your presentation. The audience should feel that you are addressing to each of them individually. It will also give them a feeling that you have done your homework well.

Focus on few goals: Figure out 2-3 most important aspects of your idea that you want to put across. You would want to include everything in your presentation but with that, you are only going to confuse your audience. Instead, focus your entire presentation on only few goals. This will help your audience to understand your ideas in a more effective manner and will get driven to the key objectives of your presentation.

Tell a story: Nobody wants to listen to straight and boring presentations. Even if you are presenting an interesting idea but in an uninteresting manner, it may still be ineffective to the audience. Imagine yourself listening to a presentation. How would you want it to be? Try to incorporate a short and interesting story relevant to your idea and audience. After all, who doesn’t like stories, it also sets a right light mood for the presentation.

Make eye contact: Even before you start speaking, your audience is going to judge you on your non-verbal communication. To successfully persuade your audience, making good eye contact is very important. Eye contact with the audience conveys that you are confident and excited about your idea. Try to make an eye contact with everyone in the audience and not just with one single person.

Include problem areas: No matter if it’s a presentation on your business idea or yearly performance, there will be some problem areas or obstacles in the implementation of that idea. These are the challenges that the idea is going to face from the audience and target customers. Try to include them in your presentation, it will communicate to the audience that you have already considered the possible hinderances. But at the same time, present solutions to these problems as well.

Invite questions: Do not just end your presentation on a thank you note. Instead, invite questions from the audience. Prepare for possible questions in advance and answer them confidently to the audience. It will help you end the presentation on a positive, impactful note.
