Question

(a) Find an article in an IEEE or ACM journal (or any other Peer Review Journal) about safes, vaults, and accessories.

(b) The successful operation of any alarm system depends on its proper installation and maintenance by the alarm installing company and the appropriate use of the system by the customer (Fennelly, 2013).

Write 4 to 6 pages on the following questions.

1.    What are some of the factors a homeowner or businesses operator should consider when acquiring an alarm system? List and explain at least three factors.

2.    Presently, video security system hardware is based on new technology that takes advantage of the significant advances in microprocessor computing power, solid-state and magnetic memory, digital processing, and wired and wireless video signal transmission, etc. In your own words what is the primary purpose of video security and why?

Explanation / Answer

Answer 1:

Factors to keep into consideration while acquiring an alarm system are:

The most basic and important question is, what object needs to be protected. Various objects like valuable assets, people’s safety, monitoring suspicious activities etc. Accordingly, the system needs to be setup. Cameras are primarily needed if people’s safety and monitoring needs to be done. Sensors are also needed if assets needs to be protected.

Depending on where the system is being installed, it has to be decided whether wireless or wired approach is suitable. Office buildings where the distance from one point to another is huge, wireless option would be suitable, as it will save cost of long wirings. In addition, it will not clutter the building and make it look ugly by long running wires. At home, wired technology is suitable as homes are usually smaller in size and wired technology is usually cheaper than the wired ones.

More you spent money the more you will get a robust system. But you need to decide based on what needs to be protected how much you are ready to invest. Offices and buildings usually have a lot of things to protect so it is worth while to invest more to keep it guarded. Homes can have a basic alarm system and that should be more than enough.

Sensors for an alarm system, performs various, tasks. For examples, motion sensors should be installed in areas where valuable assets are placed in offices to monitor trespassers. Cameras here will not be effective here as it can’t monitor the entire area expect for the window it has eyes upon.

Maintenance comes with a cost. The alarm system needs to be maintained to keep it running properly. The more the size of the system, in terms of count of cameras and sensors more will be the maintenance cost. Need to balance the cost to keep the system budget friendly.

Answer 2:

Video security is one of the most common and effective way of surveillance. This involves installing cameras at certain positions such that every area of the place can be monitored upon. These videos are then sent back to a control room where security personnel keeps an eye on the live feed on several screens. Obviously, these feed are saved to a drive for keeping historical data. The cameras can have microphones, night vision etc. to give more immersive experience to the security personnel.

Watching a live feed can be helpful mainly where certain human behaviors needs to be monitored, which a sensor cannot do it. Trained personnel can identify from a person’s body language if he is going to cause/causing some malicious activity.

Thought the system is itself very good the manual monitoring sometimes may create loop holes.

For eg, the security personnel may miss certain video feed at a moment of time, a personnel may not be monitoring the feed sometimes due to shift change or taking a break. This moment of time, a security breach may occur and the personnel may not be able to notice.

To get the best results video security along with sensors installation will be the best choice as even if video security fails to pick up a breach sensors will be able to do so, as sensors are triggered automatically. This combination will make the system full proof.
