While it may be a physical device, we now have the alternatives of using the cloud or a virtual storage site. Virtual Storage -It is an extension of main memory through secondary storage. A full fledge machine having a cpu, ram and storage is used as a storage device for enterprise application.The physical drive can be segmented to any number of partitions to provide discretion.Server virtualization divides a single server to small virtual server,while storage virtualization comprises of small storage devices into a single storage unit.

Cloud storage- In this the physical storage is comprised of multiple servers and the data's are stored in logical pools.This assembly of storage is maintained and owned by a hosting company(third party).The service provider are accountable for data availability,accessibility and protection.The communication is mainly done through webservice api's or a gateway.
Cloud and Virtualization have been used for decades, but have now garnered hype among the general public.In cloud the local do not need are configuration only a proper internet connection is required to access the database.
On the perspective of deployment and configuration cloud is more easier to set up for different platforms as it provide the backward compatibility and easy web service calls are used to invoke and initialize the required variables.

Cost perspective is slightly different ie for Virtualization High capital expenditures (CAPEX) and low operating expenses (OPEX) is required . Now cloud can be divided into Private and public clouds. For private clouds High CAPEX and low OPEX is required and for public clouds Low CAPEX and high OPEX is required.

Security: As cloud is owned by third party so the security and protection of data is the concern of third party. The company owner used robust security application to maintain the data in protection.
For virtual memory the security is of primary concern as hackers could easily breach the database so the individual servers should have proper data security implemented additionally for protection.
