Website Analysis and Classification

In this assignment, you will explore what multimedia is and what its various classifications are based on their purposes.

Part 1: Audience and Purpose

As you begin to learn about multimedia and web development, it is imperative that you start to observe the way different websites are structured and the way they relate to their audience and purpose. You can determine some of this information by performing a visual review of the website and an analysis of the media included.

Visit the following websites:

www.w3.org

www.cartoonnetwork.com

Based on your observations, analyze each of the websites. Your analysis should include the following:

Identify the purpose and the intended audience for each website. Does the audience of any of them overlap? How would you categorize each of these websites?

Discuss how the use of media has enhanced these websites with respect to the following categories:

Visual appeal

Presentation

Navigation

Rate each website in the above-mentioned categories on a scale of 1 to 5 (where 1 is the lowest) and justify your ratings. How does the purpose and audience affect the use of media on these websites?

Part 2: Classification

Websites are typically classified based on their purpose, which in turn, determines their design approach. Select and review one website from each of the following categories:

.edu

.net

.org

.com

Based on your review, answer the following questions:

What are the differences in the presentation of information in each of the categories? For instance, is one more formal than another? Does one have more information on a page than another?

How do the target audiences compare for each category? How does this affect their presentation?

Explanation / Answer

Part 1: Audience and Purpose

The Purpose

If you visit the about page of w3.org website, you find the below highlights

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international community where Member organizations, a full-time staff, and the public work together to develop Web standards.

So the purpose of the w3.org website is to tell w3c standards to audience.

Whereas the cartoonnetwork.com primarily provides children's shows, games etc., mostly animated programming, ranging from action to animated comedy.

So the purpose of the cartoonnetwork.com website is to provide entertainment for their audience

The Intended Audience & Categorization

As w3.org defines web standards, the targeted audience is everyone, who is directly dealing with web/internet. For example, the browser Chrome has to follow guidelines set by w3.org.

Whereas for cartoonnetwork.com the targeted audiences are primarily children and young teenagers between the ages of 7 to 15.

The below rating/observations are based on my personal experience/feeling. It doesn’t set the standards, and it doesn’t directly/indirectly put comments for these websites. Only shared for educational purpose.

Visual appeal/ Presentation

The w3.org contains only the documentations and it displays the content neatly. I would rate the site 4/5.

The cartoonnetwork.com is full of animations, images, & icons. But the visual could have been improved in terms of images/icons/animations shown on the home page. I would rate it 3/5.

The cartoonnetwork.com has utilized multimedia and it makes the website more interactive and lively.

Navigation

Both the websites have navigations and it helps the users navigating to the different pages.

w3.org uses menus in text format whereas cartoonnetwork.com has lots of visual elements on it.

But the navigation is not limited only till the users, it has to be SEO Friendly (SEO is a broad area to discuss, but in short it makes your page search engine friendly). I would rate both 5/5 for this category.

Part 2: Classification

.edu: Educational websites

Domains ending with .EDU are usually intended for Educational institutes. EDU is restricted to public universities and other educational institutes.

.net: Network-related domains

Domains ending with .NET are usually intended for networking services and internet service providers such as Comcast or AT&T's residential email addresses. For instance, an AT&T employee who also used AT&T for their home service would use name@att.com for their business email, but name@att.net for their residential address

.com: Commercial (for-profit) websites

Domains ending with .COM are generally intended to be used for commercial businesses, which is why they're the most commonly seen domains

.org: Non-profit organizations

Domains ending with .ORG are usually intended for non-profit organizations.

However, there's nothing legally preventing anyone from using a .ORG domain for a for-profit business, or a .NET domain for a nonprofit group. Many companies snap up all three variants in order to help protect their branding.

Going with the above statement, if the domain is used depending on the nature of the website, the .COM is more formal than .EDU followed by .ORG and then .NET.

And .NET usually doesn’t contain ant content and the domain is used for network related activities.

These domains are well known and it helps audiences identifying the nature I the websites. For example, if someone is sharing SSN number in a non .GOV sites (which is restricted for government uses only), he or she can find it risky to share the credentials.
