Question

1. The following activities are based on a recently completed group project that you have been involved in. This project may have been a student project, a work project, or an extracurricular project. a. Analyze the development of the team in terms of the five-phase model and the punctuated equilibrium model. Which model does the best job of de- scribing how the team evolved? b. Analyze the group in terms of the nine situational factors that influence team development. What factors positively contributed to group perfor- mance? What factors negatively contributed to group performance? How did the group try to overcome the negative factors? What could you have done differently to overcome these negative factors? c. Analyze how effectively the group managed meetings. What did the group do well? What didn't the group do well? If the group were formed again, what specific recommendations would you make about how the group should manage meetings?

Explanation / Answer

The five stages model given by tuckman analyzes the development of the group through following 5 stages. These stages describes how group development is affected by interpersonal relations and task behaviours

Forming-this stage shows how well the members if the group come together to form a team. here the group members learn about each other and task at hand
Storming-alas the group members start to adjust with each other there may be issues arising out of lack of cohesion, subjectivity, conflicts, anger, failure etc...here the leader goal is to act as coach to resolve such conflicts
Forming-now at this stage the group is preparing itself to perform where the members of the group clarify objectives and goals to be achieved. They address the types of communication that will or will not help with the task. The leader needs to help the group attain success and implements the project well.
Performing-here the group reach a conclusion .each member has confidence of achieving the results which result in high morale and pride. the group here implements the solution to their issue
Adjourning –at this stage the group starts to disband. The leaders hold set the future course of action for the group in order to make them work effectively on a continuous basis.

Punctuated equilibrium model-this model covers the group development in three phases starting from sudden formation, maintained and revision of framework for performance

Faze 1- here the group starts with certain assumption and behaviour pattern as to how the project emerges and remain in that framework for a long time without much progress until s revised framework is dictated.

Middle-this stage starts when half of the time has gone. This is the transition stage where group gradually change its approach towards work. The team members learn what they have done before and change their course of action.

Phase 2-now the team implements the changes as planned. The team. Team makes the final effort to achieve its goals and experiences the positive and negative consequences of past choices.

My team did not go through these stages in any of the project we have to complete. This model only works for those teams who work on long term goals such as professional teams (teams in the organizations).so here the five stages model is effective in development of the team.

Situational factors are likely to influence performance. They can influence performance by imposing constraints that must be overcome. The factors that positively affect group performance include closeness of group members to communicate well, the smaller the group the greater the opportunity to interact with each other.charateristic of individual is also an important factor. If all the members have similar attitude and similar level of commitment, the group is more likely to be cohesive. Leadership style is democratic that is more effective. If the team can stay together for long periods, this lows relationship to develop between group members. Factors negatively affecting group performance include: ego clashes among members, inadequate resources and sometimes lack of role clarity. To overcome the negative factors adequate time and material resources should be available to employees to enable them perform their work easily. This will help them perform to the best of their ability and be proud of their achievements.thwo different workers should not be given incompatible roles at the same time to avoid lack of role clarity. Any kind of mistrust among group members should be avoided.

Group managed meetings effectively by following ways:

Starting the meeting with a solid objective in mind

Time is used wisely to ensure you cover only what needs to be covered and you stick to relevant activities.
Evaluating the meeting's effectiveness based on how well you met the objective.

The things to avoid in meeting is the differences in attitudes in reaching a certain consclusion, every member shoals think from the point of view of success of an organization rather than their individual success of receiving higher pays or rewards if they prove others wrong
