Question
human resource management
topic - international HRM
Assume that you are a manager working in Africa. The supervisor reporting to you has a job opening in the marketing department. The supervisor tells his family and friends about the job, and receives many applications. In reviewing the applications with him, you realize that the supervisor knows everyone who is applying. You try to discuss the advantages of posting the job vacancy widely to identify the most qualified candidates. The supervisor argues that this is how it is done in Africa, and besides, “Why would you hire a stranger when you could hire someone you know well?” What would you do about this situation?
Explanation / Answer
I would be handling this situation very intelligently. I would not be denying the argument of the supervisor and will interview his recommended candidates but I will not hire them, instead I will put on hold some of the deserving candidates and then would publish the job opening publically and will interview the outsiders. This was the supervisor will feel that his word is also respected and as far as the organization is concerned the best candidate would be hired out of the entire lot
