Question
You designed your CPU in smartphone can offer two different modes: High Temperature Mode and Room Temperature Mode. In High TemperatureMode, CPU’s operating voltage and clock frequency will be lower than the Room TemperatureModeto increase the stability.
even in hot environment. Instruction Cycles Per Instruction Instruction counts Operating Voltage Room High Temperature Temperature Mode Mode Clock Frequency Room High Temperature Temperature Mode Mode Arithmetic million Branch million 2.8GHz 1.4GHz Load/Store a) [5pts] Calculate Average CPI of this CPU. b) (5pts) Calculate the CPU times for two different modesExplanation / Answer
Solution:
Total instruction count= 3+1+6 = 10 million
There percentage will be
Arithmetic=> 3/10 = 30 %
Branch=> 1/10= 10%
Load/Store=> 6/10= 60%
Now the
Average CPI = 5*0.3 + 3*0.1 + 4*0.6= 4.2
b)
For high temprature the execution time is= (10 * 10^6 * 4.2) / (1.4*10^9)= 0.03 sec or 30 ms
For Room temprature the execution time is= (10 * 10^6 * 4.2) / (2.8*10^9)= 0.015 sec or 15 ms
c)
energy consumption=>
Room temprature
Power = frequency * voltage^2
= 1.8^2 * 2.8 * 10^9 = 9.072 unit
High Temprature
= 1 * 1* 1.4 = 1.4 unit
Room Temp is consuming more power which is by 9.072/1.4= 6.48 times.
