Question

It can be challenging to distinguish different forms of genetic inheritance. Consider a fish that exhibits different phenotypes in the stripping pattern on its body. The character is controlled by a single gene, with only two alleles, SB and SY.

One parent is homozygous for one of the alleles for this gene, SB, and exhibits a phenotype in which two vertical blue stripes are present. The second parent is homozygous for the other allele for this gene, SY, but they exhibit two yellow vertical stripes.

What is your prediction for the phenotype of the offspring of these fish if the gene is

Explanation / Answer

1.Complete dominance means character that is dominant masks the other character. The dominant character may be in homozygous or heterozygous. If a character is recessive it will be defenietly in heterozygous condition. A cross between these two parents in a complete dominance will generate an offsprings with characters of one of the parent.

The off spring will generate a blue stripping if the vertical blue strips are dominant or generate yellow strips if the yellow condition is dominant.

2. Incomplete dominanace is a condition that that dominant character cannot completely masks the recessive character and generates a new character in the offspring that is in between the parents.

The offspring will generate an intermediate green colour stripping on its body in incomplete dominance condition.

3. Codominant is a condition both the characters of the parents appears clearly as patches in the offsprings i.e both the alleles work together to give a character. Neither of the allel is dominant and recessive.

The offspring will generate vertical blue and yellow strips as patches.

4. Parents genotype: SB SB ( Vertical blue stripping) ,   SY SY (Yellow stripping) as both are in homozygous   condition

Offsprings genotype: Four offsprings are produced all are SB SY
