1. Assume you are a supervisor of a software development team and you suspect many of your employees were watching significant parts of games during normal working hours, how would you respond? would walking around or using the technological tools violate employees' privacy, rob them of their dignity, or communicate mistrust in a damaging way?
In today’s watching games during the working hours has become a growing problem. Some studies state that billions of productivity is lost due to this problem. In order curb the behavior, the supervisors walk around or use the technological tools. Personally speaking, I would not encourage this behavior. I would walk around the workstation to curb the behavior. According to me as an employer, my focus is on increasing the productivity during the working hours. When this working hour is misused by watching games, then I would definitely take disciplinary action on the employees. The employees are recruited and selected for the production of the business and if the employees misuse the workplace for such entertainments, then the employers have all the rights to take action to curb the unethical behavior. Using the strategies of walking around or using the technological tools does not violate the employees’ privacy because as per the business policy the company’s properties should not be used for personal use. Even if the game was watched in their personal mobile, it is a loss of productivity. This behavior is violation of the organization’s code of conduct. By supervising employees, the supervisor ensures that there is no loss of productivity by this behavior. The employers take direct step towards curbing the behavior is part of the business policy. It is no way related to intruding the personal life of the employees. This step of the employer is not robbing the dignity of the employees. Instead it is only that the production is not lost during working hours. If production is lost, then the profits are lost which would result in lesser benefits to the employees.
2. How would you balance the need for productivity with respecting and trusting your employees?
An employer should balance well the need of productivity and trusting the employees. The employer should emphasize on the need for productivity to the employees. The employers can use several ways to emphasize the productivity needs. This can be achieved via supervisors training. The supervisor needs to specify the objectives of the business to the employees during their one-to-one talks, team meetings, etc. By following this strategy the employees understand the need to have productivity in the working hours and they themselves would curb the behavior of watching games during the working hours. Then, the next step on part of the employer is to respect their desires for games. Instead of following the autocratic leadership in curbing the behavior of the employees, the employer should create a sense of trust among the employees. Yes, the employer should encourage watching the games by providing televisions in the dining or the panty area. This will help the employees to watch the games during their break times. This strategy will make the employees understand that the employees trust them and encourage their personal desire. This will hence increase the productivity as the employees themselves will understand that they should have production during the working hours and they will not see any games in their devices. The employee and employer relationship is very important for an organization’s success. This is a very delicate relationship and employees need to handle this strategy effectively without harming the employees’ interest.
