CTQs are the key measurable characteristics of a product or process whose performance standards or specification limits must be met in order to satisfy the customer. These outputs represent the product or service characteristics defined by the customer (internal or external).
In order to satisfy customer requirements, organizations must improve the quality by reducing variance in production processes. The less variation the system has, the better quality it provides. Thereby, the variability of critical-to-quality characteristics (CTQs) is a measure of the uniformity of outputs.
Variability can be thought in two ways: one is inherent variability in a CTQ at a specified time, and the other is variability in a CTQ over time.
CTQ features such as timeliness/speed, cost, and quality of product or service as it identifies root causes and eliminates variations and defects.
CTQ’s are requirements that processes must perform up to if expect to meet customer expectations. Once understand this, and then can initiate six sigma projects to address the specific performance issues.
Measure variation in relation to an acceptable level of performance or specification limit. This is driven by the characteristics of CTQ.
They may include the upper and lower specification limits or any other factors related to the product or service. Typically, a CTQ must be interpreted from a qualitative customer statement to an actionable, quantitative business specification. Establishing CTQs is vital for a company to meet customer needs and keep up with the competition
