Joan believes Superior’s current time off policy creates an incentive for employees to call off at the last
minute. She has learned from supervisors that many employees use their sick days to take care of personal
business such as attending parent–teacher conferences or running personal errands. These are often events
that could be prescheduled time off, but employees do not feel they have a time off option to address such
needs. Sick days can’t be prescheduled, and vacation days are often already committed at the beginning of
the year.
Joan believes that changing the time off policies could reduce the number of unscheduled absences,
but she is not sure if her idea will address her concerns. She is considering replacing the current vacation/
sick day allowance with a paid time off (PTO) bank. Employees would receive 12 PTO days each year.
They would be permitted to schedule preferred days off at the beginning of the year so that they can make
vacation travel plans, and the remaining days could be saved for days when the employee is ill or could be
scheduled ahead of time to take care of personal business. Joan believes this change will encourage employees
to schedule their time off in advance when possible. With advance notice of absences, supervisors
will be better able to plan projects and meet deadlines.

It is a common point of concern for employees across the industries that their organisations do not have any time-off policy for employee’s personal events. As mentioned in the case, the vacation leaves are already planned at the beginning of the year itself and the sick leaves cannot be prescheduled. Hence, whenever an employee needs time for himself or for personal events going on in their lives, they don’t have any other option but to make use of the sick days time off. Changing the Superior’s present time off policies to incorporate 12 PTOs (Paid Time Off) will enable the employees to pre-schedule their off days. If they have any personal events or personal errands to attend, they can make use of the available PTOs.
I believe changing the Superior’s time off policies will definitely decrease the unscheduled time off as the employees will have more flexibility in planning their vacations and miscellaneous time off. PTO will have several other benefits as well for both the employees and the employers. With an organised and systematic time off policy in place, the employees will feel motivated and their productivity and efficiency will likely increase. With increased productivity, they will be able to perform better at their jobs and contribute to the growth of the organisation in a better way. For employers and supervisors, scheduling events such as trainings, meetings, workshops, etc. will be lot more convenient as they will be aware of the availability and non-availability of employees on particular dates in advance.
