Question

Shown below is the partial topology of an internetwork (doesn’t it look familiar?), and the
routing table contents of the three routers, A, B, and C, respectively.

Here is the picture http://i.imgur.com/0a23P.png

Also This http://i.imgur.com/Nayri.png

The command, Show Interface, issued on each router indicates that all router interfaces
are functioning at both layer 1 and layer 2.
A user on host Z tried to ping host W but received the following output:
C:UserZping 170.16.40.2
Pinging 170.16.40.2 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Questions:
1. Why did the PING packet (ICMP Echo Request) fail to reach its intended
destination?
2. How would you correct the problem? Note: configuring a static route would NOT
be a correct solution.

I would appreciate if you guys could help out a girl and give her the right direction to start.

Explanation / Answer

1)

The problem is that the ip address of A and Z are on different subnets and the router don't have the necessary information on their routing tables for the same which is causing this issue.

2)

This can be fixed by fixing the default gateway of the routers and by advertising the 172.16.40.0/24 network via RIP.
