7. Avoid finger pointing- measure performance broadly: I work with a logistics company which specializes in cold or refer transport. We were very much aware that our turnaround times were not up to the mark. Instead of pointing fingers at drivers or on logistics executive managing the vehicle. we simply presented them the data and asked them to bring the total trip down. This is the way in which instead of making this as an opportunity to trade charges, counter charges, we made it convert in to an efficiency exercise.
8. Keep Jobs flexible at boundaries: Specialization is a virtue. However, the jobs which directly impact efficiency or customer facing, they needs to be flexible. No one wants an aircraft to delay since one important person has gone sick. In my organization, we have ensured no business account is handled by a single person. There has been matrix for the same so that no key customer is left out in case some one leaves or fall sick.
9. Make Unions your partners, not adversaries: I would like to quote an example of one of the largest car manufacturers in the world. They were unable to make Unions partners. Everytime during wage negotiations, there are strikes and other problems related to that.
10. Build relationship with your suppliers: We work with one of the biggest pizza chain in the world and as compared to other customers, they have always worked along with their vendors. There has never been the pressure to reduce cost, but to improve service everytime. In order to lower down the total system costs, they ensured that they work with their vendors to bring down the costs.
