Question

In an experiment I had to do, we had to cut a potato into twostrips that are 10cm long and 1.5cm wide and fill a graduatedcylinder with 50ml of water. then place potato A into the graduatedcylinder and record the amount of water it displaced, then dothe same with potato B. After this we had to label two test tubes Aand B and place the corresponding strip of potato into each. whichthen we used a pipette to add water to tube A until the watercovers the potato strip, and do the same with the other test tubeexcept with 20% NaCl. after an hour we were supposed to remove thepotato strips and place them on a paper towl adn again measure thedisplacement of the water. With this how can I find the tonicity ofthe potato strips? would potato A be isotonic? and Potato B behypotonic?? Thank you! Explanation / Answer

We just discussed this topic in my AP Bio class, so hopefullyI can give you a satisfactory answer. Isotonic means that the liquid did not diffuse and theconcentration of water was kept the same. Hypotonic means the liquid diffused and the cell was left withless water Hypertonic means the liquid diffused and the cell gainedwater. Most likely potato B would be hypotonic because of the NaClbeing present in the water. Salt is not permeable to cellmembranes, and there would be less water in the cell causing thesolution to be hypotonic. Potato A would be hypertonic most likelybecause the cell should have gained water composition. Hope thishelps.
