Question
In an engine the connecting rod needs to be analyzed. Assume the rod is rectangular, has dimensions w times 0.125" and is made from aluminum (E = 10 times 106 psi, Su = 70 ksi, Sy =50 ksi). Assume the rod is 6" long and is pinned at each end. The pins arc steel (E = 30 times 106 psi, Su = 150 ksi, Sy =100 ksi ). A design factor of safety of nd = 2.5 is required for the rod and a factor of safety of nd = 4 is required for the pins. Determine required width (w) of the rod so that it will neither yield nor buckle, then determine the required diameter of the pins (assuming they arc in single shear and the yield shear stress is Sy/root 3 ).Explanation / Answer
