Before specifying how to conduct usability analysis, it is important to understand - "What is Usability?". So, lets first define Usability:

Usability: In general terms, usability refers to the ease of use of any system so that the needs and requirements of the intended users are satisfied. As per ISO 9241-11, it is the extent to which a product(software) can be used by specified users to achive specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction in a specified context of use.

Usability Analysis: This refers to evaluating the usability aspects of the system. This needs to be conducted into steps.

Usability Analysis Plan: A Usability Analysis Plan outlines the steps to be undertaken during usability analysis. This plan should essentially cover the following:

1. Critical goals for the system: As mentioned above, one of the factors affecting usability of the system are goals. Hence from the overall goals (requirements) of the system, identify the most critical goal(s). It helps evaluate specific tasks associated with these goals, thus further help identifying the potential usability issues.

2. Typical users of the system: To assess effect of expertise and types of users on usability, Persona (fictional representation of a typical user) can be created. This helps in detailing unique needs of each type of user.

3. Critical tasks: At this step, it is described how critical tasks with respect to critical goals identified in 1 are to be conducted. Iterative conduction of these tasks help unearth specific task issues as well as general usability issues as defined by usability heuristics. Usabilty heuristics (as per Jakob Nielsen) to be considered are:
