Question

Deceptive advertising has been a problem ever since advertising began. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) attempts to keep advertising from being deceptive. Find a youtube video that shows some sort of deception in advertising.

Example: This video infers that doctors think smoking is okay. A poll of which cigarette a doctor smokes does not indicate how many doctors smoke, or that doctors think Camels are good to smoke. But it's certainly implied.

Grading
1. Post a YouTube video of a deceptive advertisement (1 point)
2. Explain what is deceptive about it (4 points)

Explanation / Answer

(1)

I am not allowed to post web links here. So, please find the following ad on the youtube by searching for this text.

My Pillow | TV Ad/Commercial | September 2017

(2)

The ad says that the company offers two my pillows at $89.97 (which the company claimed to be the price of one pillow). The offer is deceptive because it lasted for so many days that this became the regular price of the pillow and the single pillows were available in the retail stores and online at a price of $49.99. The offer was considered deceptive because a company can’t offer a discounted price for more days during a year than it does at the regular price. By this ad, it was attracting too many customers to their website and stores and the customers were getting baffled after looking at the offered price. It must be carefully noted that the ad does not specifically mention the discounted price and just claims 'two my pillow premiums for one low price'.
