Question

You are going to take a close look at the superior-subordinate communication you encounter in the organization you’re involved with or have been involved with in the past.

1. Upward Influence– Explore your use of upward influence as a subordinate. Give a real example and pinpoint which strategy (open persuasion, strategic persuasion, or manipulation) you used and how it worked. If you have not used upward influence in the organization you work for, you can write about another time in your life you used upward influence.

2. Upward Dissent – Explore your use of upward dissent as a subordinate. Explain the situation. Which of the five strategies did you use (direct factual appeal, repetition, solution presentation strategy, circumvention strategies, or threatening strategies)? Support your answer with clear examples and explanations. If you personally have not engaged in upward dissent within the organization you work for, you can use another time in your life you have engaged in upward dissent.

Explanation / Answer

As a subordinate, I have used Upward Influence with strategic persuasion with my superior. For example, My manager needed to carry out a task of Time and Motion Study but he was lacking the capabilities. I had experience of doing this task. To grab this opportunity, during a meeting, I strategically brought out this point and made him speak about the problems he is facing and offered my skill sets to perform this task for him. This way, I strategically was planning for grabbing this point, making him speak and offered my skill set to grab it.

Upward dissent is the way you show disagreement with your superior in any organization. When you show disagreement to your superiors, you have to be careful not to hurt their ego. One of the example of my career is that I was working into setting up an office and we were discussing the layout for the office. When my manager finalized the layout, I was not convinced but I kept quite. I met with different team members from design department for exploring more options. One of the options I like which was very effective in space management. It allowed good amount of Light & Air circulation with ease of moving around and saving the space. I then went to my manager to showcase that I disagree with his finalized layout and came up with the options and finalized layout of options based on the relevant facts & figure. He was happy to see my initiative and my solution presentation strategy work with him well.
