Question

You are going to take a close look at the superior-subordinate communication you encounter in the organization you’re involved with or have been involved with in the past.

1. Trust – On a scale of 1 (no trust) to 10 (very trusting), how much or how little trust is in your superior-subordinate relationship? Use at least 3 of the 5 categories (behavioral consistency, integrity, sharing and delegating control, communication, demonstration of concern) mentioned (and detailed examples of them) that influence managerial behavior to support your assertion. For example, if you say that “behavioral consistency” is not present in your relationship with your boss, mention a situation to prove this.

2. Immediacy- On a scale of 1 (low immediacy) to 10 (high immediacy) how much or how little immediacy is present in your superior-subordinate relationship? Use at least three of the six ways (values subordinate input, attentive, expresses confidence, personal interest, etc.) mentioned (and detailed examples of them to support your points) in which a superior conveys immediacy to you as a subordinate. For example, if you mention that your superior “shows a personal interest in you”, please give an example or describe how he/she does that.

3. Providing & Seeking Feedback - Explore feedback in your superior-subordinate relationship. Part ONE: Provide one example of a superior giving you negative or positive feedback and the consequences/impact on your performance and the relationship. Did it involve strategic ambiguity? PART TWO: Then, provide one example of your superior seeking feedback from you. How did that make you feel? Did you provide the feedback your superior was seeking? If not, why not? If so, how did you do it?

Explanation / Answer

1. Trust:

I would rate my manager on a 5 scale point of 10 which is an average rating.

Reason being:

Behavioural consistency:

- there is no consistency in delegation of work

- morning a different work would be on priority and afternoon the same priority would change

- this leads to unnecessary stress by working on unnecessary stuffs.

- inturn which leads to low productivity

Delegating control:

- last minute delegation of work is a big issue with my manager

- the work would have landed up with my manager much earlier but it takes a weeks time to land up in my inbox and the delivery date would be the very next day

Communication:

- Lack of communicating at the right time is a big issue with my manager

- the whole organisation would have known if there is any update or issue in the organisation and we would be the last team to know the same

2. Immediacy:

I would rate my manager on a 5 scale point of 10 which is an average rating.

Reason being:

1. Express confidence:

- even though I being a top performer in the organisation my manager has never shown confidence in my decision making when proposed.

- later the same decision which I suggested would turn out to be a success.

2. Attentive:

- lack of attentiveness is another major issue.

- for a simple work I have to communicate through telephone firstly, then drop a mail and then keep calling for status update.

- this consumes lot of productive time and is a wastage

3. Personal interest:

- I had to reach out to my manager on my development aspects in the organisation

- manager has shown very little or no interest towards it

3. Superior giving a positive feedback:

Part 1

- since my performances have always been high, I always tend to get positive feedback

- example: I have excelled in a data migration work for which the MD himself has congratulated

- then my manager had a one on one meeting with me to give positive feedbacks about the project

Part2:

Superior seeking feedback:

- my manager took feedback from me through a 360 degree performance appraisal system

- it made me feel good to give productive feedbacks

- yes I gave what the superior was seeking for.

- manager was seeking for a genuine feedback and hence I very diplomatically put across the about trust and immediacy issues which I was facing
