An Annotated Bibliography is a set of summaries of journal or book articles on a particular topic. The goal of this assignment is to gain exposure to a particular subject in the social science literature on sexuality and health. Your assignment is to chose 5 journal or book articles (not class readings) from the social science literature on sexuality and health and summarize the article content. Articles that are purely medical in content are not appropriate for this assignment. Each summary should be 1 page in length, typed and double spaced. Each summary is worth 3.5 marks.

You must organize the bibliography around a particular topic from the sexuality and health literature. Don’t pick articles at random. Articles summarized must be from academic journals or academic books. The Bibliography must address a conceptual or theoretical issue in the sexuality and health literature. Sources that are merely descriptive are not adequate for this assignment.

The course material should give you ideas for topics. Potential topics include CONCEPTS OF SEXUAL HEALTH, SEXUAL EDUCATION (as it relates to health), CONCEPTS OF SEXUAL RIGHTS (as they relate to health), REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH/RIGHTS, SEXUALITY AND HEALTH SOCIAL MOVEMENTS, MEDICALISATION OF SEXUALITY (as it relates to health) or some dimension of HIV/AIDS ISSUES. These are suggestions. There may be other topics you wish to explore. Although not mandatory, it is a good idea to consult with me during my office hours (or by appointment) about topics/sources. Please don’t ask for assistance during the class. I cannot give you my full attention during the class. I WILL NOT DISCUSS THE ASSIGNMENT OVER EMAIL.

Do not use dissertation abstracts. Using these implies you have read the entire dissertation, which is doubtful. Dissertation abstracts will receive a zero.

Each summary must be fully referenced at the top of the page – author, title, journal or book title, date, journal volume and number, as well as page numbers of the article. Don’t use a lot of space to do this. Do not copy abstracts or conclusions. This is plagiarism. ALL DIRECT QUOTES IN THE SUMMARY MUST CITE THE PAGE NUMBER OF THE QUOTE. EACH SUMMARY ARTICLE MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A PRINTED COPY OF THE ARTICLE ABSTRACT (OR FIRST PAGE OF THE ARTICLE IF IT LACKS AN ABSTRACT). THE ABSTRACT MUST BE PRINTED DIRECTLY FROM THE ONLINE JOURNAL SOURCE. STAPLE THE ABSTRACT TO THE SUMMARY. Summaries submitted without the abstract will receive a zero. If the reading is from a book, you must include a copy of the first page of the reading and the conclusion. Book article summaries lacking these will receive a zero.

ALSO REQUIRED: WRITE YOUR TOPIC ON THE TITLE PAGE. AS WELL, PUT ALL YOUR SOURCES WITH FULL REFERENCE INFORMATION ON A SEPARATE PAGE. USE THE PARKER READING (WEEK 12) FOR BIBLIOGRAPHY FORMAT.

In its broadest sense "sexuality" describes the whole way a person goes about expressing themself as a sexual being. It describes how important sexual expression is in a person's life, how one chooses to express that sexuality, and any preference one may have towards the type of sexual partner they choose. The way we choose to behave sexually is as individual and complicated as the ways we choose to dress or earn a living. Human sexuality rarely falls into neat categories or lends itself to simple labelling, but rather is a rich and complex area of human experience.

Many theories have been put forward citing genetic pre-determination, childhood influences, and peer-pressure amongst other reasons. However, attempts to find a single cause for an individual's sexuality and sexual orientation or to influence or change an individual's sexuality have not been successful. Like many of our other characteristics, sexuality seems to be largely a chance product of one's unique nature, which is then further developed by our early interactions. Our sexuality seems to be formed by the time we reach our teens—although it may be many years later before we come to understand and accept our sexuality, which seems resistant to attempts to radically alter it.
