Think about situations in which you have had to interact with individuals in class or at work and the interaction did not go well. Which of the barriers to communication do you think may have contributed to the situation? How could you minimize or reduce those barriers to improve the situation?

Explanation / Answer

When i was in the first year of my college, i had to skip college for few days, because i was affected by Typhoid fever. Once i came back soon after getting well, i have realized that i skipped a lot of a portion of my curriculum. I was sitting in one particular class and i could not understand a bit of what my professor is saying. He could understand a question mark on my face and posed me a question, and i could not answer. And i told him i could not answer, since i missed my previous classes.

Professor was actually using jargons, which was very difficult to infer. I lacked interest in listening to class and lacked attention as well. Hence i could not sit in the class any longer and had to take a break from the college for that day. One thing that kept on worrying in my mind was, how do i prepare for my exams. I have no idea what the professor is speaking and infering to.

In order to minimize those barriers, i started working on the chapters which i missed in the class by taking help of few of my friends in the same class. They helped me cope with the subject i missed and gave me their class notes as well. Slowly i could corelate what professor was talking the other day. There were barriers to communication because, i had no idea of the what is going on in the class. Hence it looked like jargon to me, and that lacked interest and attention.
