In my current line of work, we do not necessarily use queuing systems or inventory checks. However, I have worked in situations where queuing systems and inventory checks are vital to the company’s success and reputation. Queuing systems are things such as waiting in line to check out at the grocery store, a ride at an amusement park, or receiving customer service help. When I worked at Disney during my time as an undergraduate student, it was extremely important to provide service with a smile and make every guest feel as if they were the guest of honor at the park. However, it is quite difficult to do when there is a long line of people. Therefore, the queuing systems at Disney have to be perfect. There are always many lines open to take care of as many people as possible in a quick and efficient manner. The longer people have to wait, the unhappier they may become. I would take the knowledge gained from this class and my working experience there into a future position in management to always keep in mind that people’s time is valuable, so providing great customer service in a quick manner will keep them loyal to the company.

              Inventory control is another important part of management. Inventory management seeks to have the least amount of things misplaced, stolen, lost, or spoiled. The company must forecast the demand for the supply they have in order not to lose any of the inventory, especially if it spoils or can go out of season/style. This is also true in reverse. If it is the holiday season, it is safe to assume that more supply will be needed because the demand will be higher. It is important to forecast that as well.

Explanation / Answer

Great customer service leads to making them happy and satisfied, which in turn results in repeat business and referrals, resulting in growth of the business. An aspect of customer delight is to make them realize that they are the most important to us, i.e. serving with smile. Another aspect is to value their time and make them wait for as little time as possible for availing the services. This is where, the efficiency and organizing capability of the system is put to test. The queuing system must be efficient enough to fecilitate prompt and effortless movement of customers. They will appreciate if we value their time as if it is ours.

Inventory is defined as the unused goods waiting for its turn in form of raw material, work in progress and finished items. Such items are unavoidable, as nobody wants a lost sale opportunity due to non availability of stock. They also occupy space and incur costs to keep, so a balance between both aspects is to be struck, so as to maximize the profit. Efficeint management of inventory reduces pilfereage, loss and spoilage, while good forecast helps to manage the desired quantity to address to the variation in sales. Both tasks have been made easy with help of latest technological tools available.
