For this exercise, I'd like you to take two different perspectives of a large hospital system. First, take the position of a family practitioner who is on the medical staff of the hospital and therefore admits and treats her patients there. How do you think that this doctor would classify a large hospital system? Second, take the position of an administrator of the laboratory in the large hospital system. How might the administrator classify the same organization? Consider the ways that these two diferent perspectives may be similar and how they may be different.
Once you've reflected on this, take the place as the Chief Operating Officer for the health system. The primary care physician has complained to the Chief of the Medical Staff about the time that it is taking to receive lab test results for her patients. She would like to know why physicians in larger practices seem to get their patients' results more quickly.
The CEO has asked you to investigate this issue, and you are scheduled to meet with the laboratory administrator. Considering the potential for different perspectives, how will you prepare for this meeting? For your response to this exercise, please submit a brief outline of your notes. Include plans for addressing the issues you anticipate.
Explanation / Answer
Firstly, as doctor (family practitioner) large hospitals are good as huge facilities are available at one place, so they are able to handle all type of cases. But it is also little confusing for patent as huge process are their which need to be followed due to which sometimes it is tough to get reports or other cross functional items on time. Overall it is good to be in large facility just for emergency separate process should be available.
Secondly as laboratory administrator it is very tough to be in large organization as their huge process are there for every report, so it takes huge time to release a report. Many times we have issues with doctor and we understand them but due to process it is not possible at our end also to give report without completing all steps. These process help in maintaining quality and documentation and also help in ensuring correct results at all time but in some case it is an issue.
COO will talk to both then sides and they it seems that they both are right. And also point to same situation that optimization is needed and also separate process are also needed in order to handle emergency situations. So he will propose different cases and then will try to convince CEO in process change and also this is not a fault of any specific person. It is a issue at process which need to be improved
