1. Discussions and examinations of organizational values are woven throughout our course and text. IU as an institution and our textbook authors seem to believe that values should drive management decisions.

However, another school of thought is that businesses have but one moral imperative and that is to earn a profit so that they can continue to employ people, who in turn, will live according to the values of their own choosing, rather than those dictated by their employer.

Discuss these two points of view.

Explanation / Answer

Both the statements are right, but in the first statement, the value driven management decisions are with respect to the management in taking strategic decisions with respect to operating a business in an ethical way with morals and principles. In the second statement, it is more about individuals working for the organization, their values and choices, and taking independent decisions rather than being under the influence of the organization. Both are right in their respective stance.

Value driven management decisions

The goal of the value driven management decisions is to make sure that the decisions that are taken will have a long term and positive impact for the good of the organization. Value driven decisions are with respect to a business which helps in long lasting relationships with all those business is associated with. It reaps positive benefits and helps the organizations to grow in an organic way, driven with ethics and values.

Earning profits, employing people and allowing people to choose their values

In the present scenatio, most of the companies are following this strategy. In order to earn more profits to the organization and to satisfy the stakeholders, oganizations are hiring more people such that they can bring in more and more profits. When the employees perform well and make the company proud, they are given the freedon to work in their own terms. This will again be a positive aspect where employees are empowered, and choose to work according to they terms and values. Therefore this is value driven employees decisions point of view.

Both are similar, but the application is different. One is with respect to the business and other one is from the employee point of view.
