Question

A small lab has recently expanded to seven computers and istrying to design and layout their network across their two-roomfacility. In the main room, each of the five researchers hastheir own computer, and one printer is shared among allemployees. The printer can be connected to a computer andshared with the other computers or connected directly to a networkhub. In the lab room, the other two computers are specializedsystems that control lab tools. The five researchers commonly workfrom their computer and use a remote desktop session on thespecialized lab computers to manipulate experiments in the lab.

what network layout for the lab would you propose? Justifythe topology.

Explanation / Answer

I would use a Star topology. Reason being is that theresearchers all use the two research computers in another lab. Ifyou were to use a bus or ring topology and one of the computersgoes down then they may not all be able to remote into the researchcomputers until it was fixed. Also it says that you could use a hubto connect the printer, this is a much better if you can do thisbecause then you will not need to leave a computer turned on foranyone to print or have to worry about sharing betweencomputers. Also it says they have recently expanded, a star topologyis the most forgiving when you expand. Whats to say they won't wantto expand again to more computers. With a star topology you couldalso use a Layer 3 switch to setup a vlan if need be, this way youcould seperate the research lab and the common work area if youwanted to. Although in this case it really wouldn't matter with theamount of users there are.
