Explanation / Answer

There was an incident when I was the project manager of a power plant installation project for one of the client. I had a team of around 50 people working with me which comprised Electricians, Workers, and Engineers etc. The project was in a very critical stage of commissioning and team was working under tremendous pressure to complete the project within required timeframe. One day, there was a technical problem with the transformer which stopped our testing work at site. I called one of my subordinate who was looking after the transformer and asked him to rectify the transformer as we were running on a very thin deadline. I pressurized him using my legitimate power to stay in the company late in the evening to finish his work. Also I promised him a good rating if he completes his work successfully. This way I also used reward power. Because of this, he was able to complete his work within 3 days and project successfully got commissioned within the deadlines.

If I have to reflect back on that decision now, I will like to use referent power and reward power and avoid using my legitimate power. Referent power motivates people to give their best. Referent power fosters loyalty and admiration.
