Question

You are a systems analyst at Global Cooling, a leading manufacturer of air conditioning units. You are leading a team that is developing a new production scheduling system. The project is now in the application development stage. Unit testing has been completed, and you are in the final stages of integration testing.

Your supervisor, Ella Pham, is eager to implement the new application ahead of schedule and asked if you could trim system testing from two weeks to three days, and use a direct cutover method instead of the parallel changeover method that originally was planned. Write a brief memo expressing your views.

Explanation / Answer

Solution :-

This a situation where one should follow the ethics of the profession. The new product is in the final stage of testing and it is essential to test the developed system with integration of different units. Developers should run the system as a whole and obserev behaviour and outputs. If there is any discrepancy then the system needs to be corrected.

The detailed behaviour and outputs can be observed in a defined testing period of time. If testing period is compromised then some behavioural discrepancies may not be detected and system generates error in a live working environment. That is counted as lapse of developing team. Therefore, the developed system is hardwork of the team should be implemented in proper phases with complete and sufficient testing. So that system runs efficiently in live working environments.

So, in my view you should discuss with your supervisor about the testing time completeness is essential for the successful design of the system. Then perform the sufficient integration testing of the system for a defined period and develop a successful system.
