Question

Problem 4 Processor 1 L1 Cache specifications: L1 Size = 2 KB, L1 Miss Rate = 15 %, LI Hit Time = 0.8 ns Processor 2 L2 Cache specifications: L1 Size = 4 KB. L1 Miss Rate = 9 %, LI Hit Time = 0.72 ns Assume that the main memory accesses take 50 ns. a) What is the AMAT (Average Memory Access Time) for each of the processor? b) The Base CPI of the processor is 1.0. What is the total CPI for each of the processor? Problem 5: Assume that the processors stated in the previous problem have L2 cache. Processor i L2 Cache specifications: L2 Size 512 KB. L2 Miss Rate 96 %, L2 Hit Time= 4.1 ns Processor 2 L2 Cache specifications: L2 Size = 256 KB, L2 Miss Rate 88 %, L2 Hit Time= 3.5 ns Recalculate the AMAT of the L1 cache of each processor.

Explanation / Answer

Problem 1

a)

AMAT =  h*Tc +(1-h)*M

Assuming both are L1 cache (as per problem 2 description)

AMAT processor 1 = 0.85 * 0.8 * 10-9 + 0.15 * 50 * 10-9 = 8.18ns

AMAT processor 2 = 0.91 * 0.72 * 10-9 + 0.09 * 50 * 10-9 = 5.1552ns

b)

Total CPI = base CPI + (1-h)*M

Processor 1: 1 + 0.15 * 50 * 10-9

Processor 2: 1+ 0.09 * 50 * 10-9

Problem 2:

AMAT processor 1: 0.85 * 0.8 * 10-9 + 0.15 * (0.04 * 4.1 * 10-9 + 0.96 * 50 * 10-9) = 7.9046ns

AMAT processor 2: 0.91 * 0.72 * 10-9 + 0.09 *( 0.12 * 3.5 * 50 * 10-9 + 0.88 *50 * 10-9) = 6.5052ns
