Question
Problem 4 Analyze statements i, ii, and ii as true or false. Explain why each is true or false. Circle the correct answer A through E Which of the following statement(s) regarding ionization energies is/are correct? i. Be > B because it takes less energy to remove a 2p electron in B than an 2s electron in Be li. Mg > Sr because the electrons in Mg are closer to the nucleus than in Sr ili. The removal of the 4th electron in Si, would require a massive increase in energy compared to the removal of the 3rd electron. A. i only B. ii only C. ili only D. i and ii E. il and ii Why did you get this problem wrong on the exam and how do you intend to fix this for the final exam?Explanation / Answer
ANSWER:
(i) Be > B. This statement is true, becauser Be has completely filled last shell hence more stable configuration. So more energy is required toremove the last electron of Be.
(ii) Mg > Sr, True becuase the size of Sr is bigger than Mg, hence electrons are loosely bound.
(iii) False, the valence elecronic configuration of Si is 3s2 3p2 after removing two electrons the third electron is to be removed from 3s2 which is completely filled hence more stable.
Hence option (D) is correct answer.
