Question

Suppose you are hired as the Lead Data Modeler & Database Administrator for an organization and are responsible for designing a database for a new client. The Project Manager scheduled a new client project kick-off meeting that included all the appropriate stakeholders. A few weeks into the project, you notice that during the project meetings, in which it is your job to obtain the business rules to design and develop the database, the client keeps changing their mind and you are not really getting good information. You’ve discussed this with the Project Manager, the Salesperson, and it has been mentioned to the client—but meetings keep getting scheduled, things are discussed, and you’re no further ahead after a few more weeks. The client is expecting a deliverable shortly and you are now getting pressure from the Project Manager and Salesperson to come up with something. They also expect you to deliver a great product. How would you handle this situation

Explanation / Answer

First of all thanks for posting the question.

Initially it depends on which model your company is using to build the project.

if its Agile then you have to make the changes as per client's requirements.

Second, if all the requirements are already closed then you can ask for time to your Project Manager because changes have been made. Right now you can contact your PM and Client for the Same they will help you.

Don't get stressed because things will not work properly if you do so.

If you can work extra hours (which should be billable), just do that.

Make the record of all changes that client is making and show it to PM so that he/she will get to know about it and will give you more time to develop.

Keep in Mind following things for your future:-

Educate your client about the real purpose of a revision.

Don't jump into doing a revision right after the client has provided their initial comments.

Clearly, define when change requests will be considered extra work and how this will be billed

Don't forget to show your goodwill and flexibility.
